FlameThrowers Light Up SoCal Roadtrip With Double Wins
Spirits were high for the San Francisco FlameThrowers after traveling to Los Angeles on Saturday and San Diego on Sunday to collect two more wins. Those placed the FlameThrowers at the top of the Western Division with a record of 4-1.
The FlameThrowers took their game on the road this weekend for an important back-to-back trip against the Los Angeles Aviators and the San Diego Growlers. They played two tough contests in the hot southern California climate, coming away with solid wins that saw both offensives highlights against the Aviators and a defensive grind against the Growlers.
In Los Angeles, the field conditions were ideal for an offensive display. Both teams came out firing and scored a combined 15 goals in the first quarter. The score remained close throughout the first twelve minutes and was knotted at 7-7 with only a few seconds left to go in regulation when Cassidy Rasmussen launched a saucy buzzer-beating hammer to Antoine Davis. That score put the FlameThrowers up 8-7 heading into the first break, and by halftime they had pushed that advantage to two goals.
In the third quarter, San Francisco cranked up the defensive pressure to earn a four point lead. Patrick Baylis and Sam Kanner both came up with chest high layout blocks that were converted into scores. During the final period, the FlameThrowers fought off a frenzied comeback attempt by the Aviators, adding a few other highlights include a Greg Cohen sky in triple coverage, and held on to their lead for a final score of 26-22.
The FlameThrowers had no time to celebrate as the team was immediately on the road again, driving towards San Diego to gear up for a rematch against the Growlers.
Playing in the swirling Balboa Stadium winds and under the scorching San Diego sun (they now have the sunburns to prove it), the FlameThrowers had to battle back from an early 2-4 deficit to get back within 1 by the end of the first. This defensive grind continued into the second quarter as the teams fought a low-scoring battle and found themselves tied at halftime.
Co-captain Lucas Dallmann fired up the team with a speech at the break, and the team rallied in the third quarter. On a long huck that seemed to be going well out of bounds, Eli Kerns flew through the air and completed a Greatest all the way back to Antoine Davis who worked it around for a score. Check our Twitter later for a replay! Other notable players included Cody Kirkland who threw stellar pulls for the defensive line and Vincenzo Vitiello who led its charge by sprinting down the field even late in the fourth quarter.
The FlameThrowers carried a two point lead into the final period, but the Growlers battled hard and fought back to bring the score within one going down the stretch. Luckily, the FlameThrowers were able to hold on and won with a final score of 21-20 in their closest victory of the season.
By the Numbers
In the win over the Aviators, Cassidy flung the disc all over the field, leading the team with a mind-boggling nine assists on 32 completions, while Eli, in his first 2017 FlameThrowers game, handed out another six assists. Lior Givol, Lucas and Antoine each had three blocks to anchor the defense. Davis and Marcelo Sanchez each scored a game-high six goals and twelve different FlameThrowers earned a point.
Against San Diego, Baylis and Kerns each dished out four assists during the low-scoring affair. The defense earned nine total blocks with four separate players getting two apiece. Lucas and Cassidy led the scoring with four goals each.
The FlameThrowers play at home next on May 13, when they face off against the Seattle Cascades for the first time since winning the inaugural Cascades Cup earlier this season. The Cascades are the defending Western Division champions, so this should be an incredible game!
